Slate Viewer guide
How to open ChatGPT and Claude Markdown exports on Mac
You exported a chat—or someone sent you a Markdown report from ChatGPT or Claude—and you want to read it on a Mac without spinning up an IDE or a vault. Slate Viewer for Mac (slateviewer.com / App Store id 6789441727) is a local file reader—not Unreal Engine’s SlateViewer, not Technolutions Slate Reader, and not the jigish/slate window manager.
This guide covers what those exports usually look like, how to open a .md file locally, and what to do if you still have the official JSON/ZIP dump.
Slate Viewer is the reader step in this workflow. It does not replace ChatGPT’s or Claude’s export UI, privacy settings, or account tools. It does not log in to OpenAI or Anthropic or download chats from their servers—it reads files you already saved on your Mac.
What you usually get from an export
Not every “export” is a ready-to-read Markdown file.
- ChatGPT account export: typically a ZIP that includes
conversations.json(and often HTML). That dump is useful for backup and conversion—it is not Markdown you open and skim immediately. - Claude data export: conversation data is commonly JSON-oriented, not a folder of polished
.mdfiles. - Per-chat Markdown: browser extensions, copy-as-Markdown flows, and converters often produce one
.mdfile per chat. That is the usual path when someone says “open this ChatGPT/Claude export as Markdown.”
Be honest with the pipeline: Slate Viewer reads the files you already have. It does not pull chats out of ChatGPT or Claude for you.
Path A — You already have a .md file
- Save or download the Markdown into a folder on your Mac.
- Open it in Slate Viewer—use Finder Open With, or drag the file onto the app.
- Use Preview to read headings, lists, code fences, and tables as laid out text.
- Switch to Raw when you need to verify formatting, fences, or odd characters from the export.
- Use light edit only if a small fix is enough; this is a reader-first app, not a full writing environment.
- Optional: for Markdown, translate a full document or a selection between English and Simplified Chinese, then switch back to the original view without rewriting the source file.
If you are still confirming what the app is for, start with What is Slate Viewer for Mac?. For Markdown-specific habits (including Quick Look), see Open and read Markdown files on Mac.
Path B — You have the official JSON/ZIP dump
- Unzip the archive and locate the conversation JSON (and any HTML) the provider included.
- Remember that bulk dumps are JSON-oriented. Turning them into per-chat Markdown is a separate conversion step. Many people use converters or scripts for that; treat those as third-party tools—not as “official” ChatGPT or Claude features, and not as something Slate Viewer ships.
- Once you have
.mdfiles, follow Path A. - If you prefer to inspect the raw structured dump instead of converting first, see JSONL / NDJSON viewer for Mac—prefer that when the job is “open the JSON/JSONL export,” not “read a Markdown report.”
Why a reader beats pasting into Notes or an IDE
Conversation Markdown is rarely plain paragraphs. It usually carries headings, lists, fenced code, and tables. A Preview mode makes that scannable; Raw lets you check what the exporter actually wrote.
A dedicated local reader also keeps the job small:
- Local-first: the file stays on your Mac. Slate Viewer does not upload document text, paths, JSON fields, table cells, or clipboard contents by default.
- Not a vault or workspace: you are not creating an Obsidian library or a VS Code project just to read one export. For when that distinction matters, see Slate Viewer vs VS Code & Obsidian Preview.
Requirements before you try Slate Viewer
- macOS 26.0 or later on Apple Silicon
- Mac App Store only — live build 1.4.2 (if a website still shows an older number, trust the App Store)
- One-time US $14.90 during the launch-price period ending January 20, 2027
- Product site: slateviewer.com · App: Mac App Store · Pricing
If your Mac is on an older system version, keep using whatever reader or editor you already have until you can meet macOS 26.0+.
FAQ
Can Slate Viewer open ChatGPT Markdown exports on Mac?
Yes. If you have a .md file from a chat export or converter, open it in Slate Viewer for Preview, Raw, and light edit. Official ChatGPT account dumps are often JSON/HTML first, not Markdown.
Does Claude export chats as Markdown by default?
Claude’s account data export is typically JSON-oriented. Many users create Markdown via per-chat export tools or converters, then open those .md files locally.
Does opening an export in Slate Viewer upload the conversation?
Not by default. Slate Viewer opens files locally and does not upload document text, paths, JSON fields, table cells, or clipboard contents to Slate Viewer servers.
Can I translate an English ChatGPT Markdown export to Chinese without changing the file?
For Markdown, Slate Viewer can translate a full document or selection between English and Simplified Chinese and switch back to the original without rewriting the source file.
What macOS version is required?
Slate Viewer 1.4.2 requires macOS 26.0 or later on Apple Silicon.
Is this Unreal Engine’s SlateViewer?
No. Slate Viewer for Mac is a local AI result-file reader (App Store id 6789441727). It is unrelated to Unreal Engine’s Slate UI framework, Technolutions Slate Reader, and the jigish/slate window manager.
